Social Emotional IEP Goals

Conflict avoidance is a common goal for many students. This IEP goal is designed to help students navigate how to make choices to move away from a conflict situation in the classroom. The goal is to help the student understand how to read social cues and identify when it might be best to move away from a potential conflict. This can be a difficult skill for many students, but it can become easier with practice. An example of reading social cues to avoid conflict would be if a student sees that another student is upset or getting angry, the student might choose to move away from the situation to avoid an altercation. Another example could be if a student sees that someone is about to do something that might get them into trouble, they might choose to move away from the situation. This goal can be helpful for students who have a difficult time with social interactions or tend to get into conflict often. This IEP goal should be worked on in different settings, such as the classroom, during recess, or at lunch. It is important that the student has a chance to practice this skill in different environments so that they can learn to apply it in different situations. The goal should be reviewed regularly with the student to see how they are progressing and to make any necessary adjustments. With practice, the student should be able to start using this skill more automatically in different situations.
