Introduction

Begin the lesson by explaining to students that words are made up of different parts called syllables. Show an example word like "watermelon" and break it down into its syllables (wa-ter-mel-on). Clap your hands as you say each syllable to help students understand the concept.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling

Explain that each syllable has one vowel sound. Demonstrate counting syllables in several words by clapping or using your jaw to show when it drops for each syllable. Use words with different syllable counts (e.g., "cat" (1 syllable), "table" (2 syllables), "elephant" (3 syllables)). Show how to sort these words into categories based on their syllable count.

Guided Practice
