Determine Words That Have the Same Sound

Prerequisite Skill

Materials and Preparation

  • Guided Practice Worksheet: "Determine Words That Have the Same Sound"

  • Independent Practice Worksheet: "Determine Words That Have the Same Sound"

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to identify words that end with the same sound.

Introduction

Begin the lesson by asking students to listen to a specific sound and identify which two words have that sound. Show cards with the words "net," "bet," and "beg." Emphasize that words are made up of sounds, and some words end with the same sound.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling

Present an example question: "Listen to the sound. Which two words have that sound? Net, bet, beg." Illustrate the key idea that words can end with the same sound. Provide examples such as "pig" and "big" ending with the same "ig" sound, and "cat" and "fat" ending with the same "at" sound. Solve the example by revealing that the sound heard is "et" and that "net" and "bet" end with that sound, while "beg" does not.

Evaluate student understanding through their participation in guided and independent practice, completion of worksheets, and performance on the exit ticket.

Review and closing

Summarize the lesson by emphasizing the skill of determining words that have the same ending sound and its importance in developing phonological awareness.

Misconceptions

Be aware that students may confuse the ending sound with other sounds in the word. Reinforce the concept that the focus is on the sound at the end of the word.
