Classify and Sort by Shape

Prerequisite Skill

Materials and Preparation

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • TeachTastic Worksheet Pack for Classifying and Sorting by Shape
  • Picture cards with objects of different shapes (e.g., circles, squares, triangles)
  • T-chart graphic organizers
  • Student notebooks and pencils

Learning Objectives

  • Students will understand how to classify objects by shape.
  • Students will be able to sort objects into groups based on their shapes.
  • Students will demonstrate their understanding through sorting exercises and using a T-chart graphic organizer.

Introduction

Begin by discussing why sorting objects by shape is important. Provide an example with different shaped buttons: two round buttons and one square button. Explain that sorting helps us organize objects based on their characteristics.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling

Display three buttons on the board: two round buttons and one square button. Ask students, "How can we sort these buttons by shape?" Guide them to classify the buttons into two groups:

  1. Show the square button and say, "This button is shaped like a square."
  2. Show the two round buttons and say, "These buttons are shaped like circles."

Draw a T-chart on the board with two columns labeled "Square" and "Circle." Sort the buttons into the correct columns:

  • Write "One square button" in the Square column.
  • Write "Two circle buttons" in the Circle column.

Guided Practice

Hand out the Guided Practice worksheet from the TeachTastic Worksheet Pack. Work through the first few sets of objects together, identifying the shapes and sorting them into the correct groups using a T-chart graphic organizer. Use picture cards with different shapes to engage students in the sorting activity.

Independent Practice

Students will complete the Practice worksheet independently, where they classify and sort objects into groups based on their shapes. Encourage students to use a T-chart graphic organizer to sort the objects correctly.

Differentiation

Support

  • Visual Aids: Use posters or charts with different shapes and examples of objects that match each shape.
  • Peer Assistance: Pair students who understand the concept with those needing extra help.

Extension

  • Real-Life Application: Ask students to classify and sort objects in their environment, such as toys or household items, based on their shapes and share their findings with the class.
  • Creative Sorting: Have students draw a picture with various shaped objects and exchange with a partner to classify and sort the objects correctly.

Assessment

Use the Assessment worksheet from the TeachTastic Worksheet Pack to evaluate students' understanding. Ensure they can accurately classify and sort objects by shape and use a T-chart graphic organizer.

Review and closing

Review the importance of classifying and sorting objects by shape. Address common misconceptions, such as misidentifying shapes or incorrectly sorting objects. Allow students to ask any final questions or share their observations about the lesson.

Misconceptions

  1. Misidentifying shapes: Clarify the characteristics of each shape.
  2. Incorrectly sorting objects: Ensure students understand the criteria for sorting by shape.
